We are finally finishing our 9 day stretch from Brazil to Ghana. We just finished our pre-port briefing and tomorrow morning we will be in Ghana. The long haul on the Atlantic Ocean wasn’t as bad as I was expecting at all! The water was as smooth as glass almost the whole time, it was amazing. My days consisted of waking up to work out at 7 (a group of us do videos like p90x called insanity), going to breakfast, shower, class, lunch, class, pool, nap, dinner, study, movie almost every day. We had class for 6 days in a row and it didn’t feel that weird having class on Saturday and Sunday because we are in our own little world while everyone at home is freezing and having snow days.
My roommate’s birthday was last Saturday so a group of us surprised her and signed up for fine dining. We each have to pay for our spot but it has a 5 course delicious meal! It was such a treat! So nice to get a break from the cafeteria food. Almost every meal consists of potatoes in some sort, pasta, and some sort of meat. It is amazing how many potatoes they cook on this ship! At the fine dining we had stuffed chicken breasts, chicken lollipops, pasta, salad, and a delicious chocolate soufflĂ© and a birthday cake of course.
One of the days I went on a bridge tour (where all the controls of the ship are) and it was so neat! It was cool seeing the ocean from the front of the boat instead of the sides and the back. The captain came out and talked to us for about 30 minutes and it was nice to get to know him a little bit. He is from England and has quite the sense of humor but is still very reserved. I asked him what his favorite part of his job was and he said, “Some people say absolute power corrupts but I think it’s rather neat (English accent).”
The other day we had a break from classes and had Sea Olympics. Each deck represents a different Sea and we had 8 teams compete against each other in all sorts of silly games like tug o war, dodge ball, 3 legged race, trivia, house of cards building and the funniest was the synchronized swimming. I competed in the hula-hoop contest but didn’t win. My Sea was the Bering Sea and our color was purple (how perfect for me). It was so much fun cheering everyone on and each team had their own chants it reminded me of high school pep rallies. Everyone on the ship was involved, even the teacher and their families. The winning team gets to get off the ship first when we get back to America. My team didn’t win unfortunately but it was still a great day.
In all my classes we have been preparing for Ghana so I am excited to see what it’s like. At night they will play movies on a loop on a few channels that goes to all the tvs. After Brazil we watched City of God which is about the slums in Brazil, The Bittersweet Truth about Chocolate (a movie about child labor in the cocoa business in Ghana), and right now I am watching Blood Diamond. There is so much going on it kind of distracts me from not living the normal like of watching TV, having a phone, and using the internet. Tomorrow I am going in to a village to see the Queen Mothers of the village for one of my classes and then tomorrow night they are trying to get the super bowl streamed to the ship. It will start at about 11 here. On Monday I am doing habitat for humanity all day long and then the rest of my days will be free to explore. I will post pictures and another blog after all my activities!
I will put pitcures up when I have better internet :)
